Publisher's Weekly Review:
"The vivid descriptions allow readers to feel Natalie's pain....The strength of this novel is the author's ability to create sympathetic, layered personalities."
At fourteen, Natalie Morgan was declared clinically dead, the victim of a brutal attack by her abusive mother's boyfriend, a man she barely knew. Against all odds, Natalie was revived on that fateful night, and she took full advantage of her second chance with the help of an unlikely stranger named Bernie. What she couldn't have prepared for was her extraordinary, newfound ability to hear the voices of the dead as a result of her encounter with death.
Now a successful psychologist, Natalie helps at-risk kids, using her psychic ability by quietly feeding the information she receives from these deceased victims to the Sarasota Police. She has managed to put the horrific incident of her youth behind her-that is, until two local teenage girls are murdered within weeks of each other, and one of the victims contacts Natalie with disturbing information.
Jake Riggs, the FBI agent assigned to the case, makes no effort to conceal his disdain for being forced to work with a psychic; however, hidden behind his dismissal of Natalie's abilities and the unexplainable coincidences in the case is a powerful attraction he cannot deny.
When the case takes a too-personal turn after the killer suddenly targets Natalie, she knows that if she is to survive a second time, Jake must learn to believe the unbelievable.
When conservative journalist Grace Brinkley is unexpectedly laid off from the Seattle newspaper where she works, she is forced to take a temporary job writing fortunes for a fortune cookie company just to pay the mortgage. As if that weren't humiliating enough, she must also deal with Ben Reed, the fortune cookie company's admittedly gorgeous but apparently ill-mannered tax attorney, after Grace inadvertently commits the mother of all social transgressions in his presence. To make matters even worse, someone at the company is anonymously leaving fortune cookies on Grace's desk containing fortunes she thinks are meant to tell her something—but what?
While Ben, in turn, may be amused by the circumstances under which he met Grace, his confidential investigation into potential irregularities in the company books, coupled with Grace's sudden employment with his valued client, just don't add up. Suspicious, he decides to stick close to the rosy-cheeked stranger despite the highly unorthodox nature of their first meeting.
As Grace navigates her way through a new and unconventional job, a puzzling mystery akin to a game of Clue, and an exasperatingly attractive man with a sudden and perplexing interest in her, she has no idea that fate is leading her down the path to an entirely new way of looking at life…and love.

Publisher's Weekly reviewed the novel and called it a "charming romantic mystery" that was "filled with relatable, well-envisioned characters", "witty dialogue," and was "alternately laugh-out-loud funny and heartwarming."
Welcome, Readers!
I have always been captivated by the mysterious and the unexplained, believing that our existence holds depths far beyond what we can truly fathom. Alongside that sense of wonder, I hold a steadfast faith in the power of love—a force so profound and enduring that it can weather any storm. My stories are a reflection of these core convictions, and I hope you enjoy exploring them as much as I enjoyed bringing them to life.
Following a lengthy career as a business and contracts attorney, Danette Kriehn retired in 2025 to dedicate herself to her lifelong passion for writing. She now happily trades the structure of legal contracts for the creative art of storytelling.
